Rome, 11 November 2025 - "The reform of the energy taxation directive to be discussed at the Ecofin on 13 November contains a crazy and nefarious proposal to increase excise duties on gas, coal and oil, according to the 'polluter pays' principle. This proposal that has been on the table since 2021, already strongly permeated by the European Union's green policy, would radically kill Italian industry by increasing taxation on natural gas, which is the main source of electricity for our manufacturing sectors. This is yet another compromise of the European presidency-in-office that would also impact the bills of Italian households.

This is why, as Confindustria, we are pleased that Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti has announced the government's willingness to veto the proposed revision of green taxation. Indeed, with the price of methane at TTF above 30 euro/MWh, tightening the tax burden on energy risks undermining the survival of many production chains and increasing household bills. In this context, we are convinced that the ETS mechanism should also be suspended, as it no longer makes sense to charge CO2 on power plants. We hope that the Italian government will continue to fight in the European Union for a profound rethink of environmental policy, safeguarding competitiveness and jobs."
