Rome, 30 October 2025 - Today, in Rome, the President of Confindustria, Emanuele Orsinitogether with the Vice President for Internationalisation and Investment Attraction, Barbara Cimminomet with the Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, Maroš Šefčovič.
The meeting took place at a crucial time for European industry, characterised by profound changes in international economic relations and the need to ensure a trade policy consistent with the objectives of growth, competitiveness and security.
While thanking Commissioner Šefčovič for his commitment to a stronger industrial and geopolitical Europe, Orsini underlined that 'the rules of global trade are changing rapidly and irreversibly: to avoid the marginalisation of the European Union we need to put industry at the heart of the new strategies. Trade and economic security are today two inseparable dimensions and Europe must address them in a united and pragmatic way'.
Among the topics addressed, Confindustria reiterated its support for the Commission's negotiating agenda on trade agreements, urging the approval of the Mercosura market of over 700 million consumers. This is a strategic agreement for Italian manufacturing and for the European economy as a whole, the benefits of which outweigh the concerns of individual sectors,' Orsini pointed out.
Ample space was devoted to transatlantic relations, in particular the duties on steel, aluminium and derivatives, which affect more than a thousand products of the main European industries and are 'unsustainable'. The President stressed that 'the defence mechanism proposal is positive. Steel is crucial for competitiveness, green transition, defence and security', and hoped that the new European mechanism would contribute to a fairer balance in bilateral relations'.
'European industry is ready to play its part,' the President concluded, 'but we need stable international rules, balanced trade agreements and a European framework that rewards those who invest, innovate and produce in Europe. On these bases we will build, together with Medef e BDIa joint contribution to the trilateral to be held in Rome next week'.
