The LIFE programme is the only programme specifically dedicated to the environment and climate action and therefore plays a crucial role in supporting the implementation of Union legislation and policies in these areas. The financial envelope for the implementation of the LIFE Programme for the period 2021 - 2027 is set at 5.4 billion at current prices.

To promote the circular economy and efficient use of resources, it is necessary to change the way materials and products are designed, produced, consumed, repaired, reused, recycled and disposed of, focusing on the entire life cycle of products. The LIFE Programme should contribute to the transition towards a circular economy model financing various actors, such as businesses, public authorities and consumers, in particular through the application, development and replication of best techniques, practices and solutions adapted to local, regional or national contexts, and which can be replicated and used on a larger scale. Innovative solutions will be able to contribute to improved environmental performance and sustainability, in particular for the development of sustainable agricultural practices in the areas of climate, water, soil, biodiversity and waste.

Given the importance of combating climate change in a coordinated and ambitious manner, in line with the Union's commitments to implement the Paris Agreement on climate change and achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the LIFE will contribute to the integration of climate actions into policies and to the overall objective of allocating at least 30 % of total EU budget expenditure to support climate objectives. Actions under the LIFE Programme should contribute 61 % of its total budget to these objectives.

The LIFE Programme comprises two main fields of action - environment and climate action - and four sub-programmes.
