Contrasting signals emerge from the economic analysis of the 2022 edition of the Check-Up Mezzogiorno, drawn up by Confindustria and SRM. The Mezzogiorno had embarked on a difficult path of post-pandemic recovery to which were added the geopolitical, economic and trade tensions associated with the conflict in Ukraine that were transferred to our production system through a series of effects that, once again, highlighted the profound heterogeneity of our production fabric and the different exposures of local economies. Nevertheless, analyses show that the southern economy is showing unexpected resiliencealthough on many of the indicators under analysis, it maintains and, indeed, sometimes increases the gap with the Centre-North.
The Synthetic Index of the southern economy continues to grow after the collapse in 2020. The first estimate for 2022 shows a value of 503.6, more than 27 points higher than the previous year. For the first time in the last 15 years, the 2007 level is exceeded. All individual indicators are on the rise, and for all of them the loss related to recent events has been made up with values higher than those recorded in 2019; the only exception is the employment figure, which is nevertheless close to the finish line.
