The Italian textile sector, which represents one of the main industrial excellences of our country, with its 40,000 companies and a total turnover of almost 60 billion euro in 2024can benefit considerably from the implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility. This type of instrument, in fact, offers concrete opportunities to strengthen the competitiveness of the sector, stimulate the creation of new jobs and raise consumer awareness of sustainability issues. In Italy there are already some excellences that deserve to be encouraged and strengthened.

The principle of Extended Producer Responsibility is in general a key instrument to promote the transition from a linear model, based on production and disposal, to a circular and sustainable model. In fact, this principle promotes a shared approach between producers, consumers and regulatory authorities, aimed at ensuring sustainable development through responsible resource management, and encourages a shift from a linear model, based on production and disposal, to a circular and sustainable model that considers the environmental and social implications throughout the entire life cycle of products.

Confindustria, therefore, reiterates its appreciation for this initiative and hopes for a model capable of promoting competitive costs for producers, the reintegration of materials into production districts and the valorisation of circular production throughout the textile chain, key elements for the success of the instrument.
