Economic violence

The focus on the economic sphere, as an aspect of violence against women, is certainly more recent than the focus on the physical, sexual and psychological spheres, even though they are often components of the same unacceptable act or behaviour.

In 2023, 40.2% of the women who started a pathway, at anti-violence centres, to get rid of violence, stated that among the violence they experienced was economic violence.

The school world can be instrumental in raising awareness and promoting an equity-oriented gender culture.

And if 44.1% of women who have started a pathway out of violence declare that they are not economically autonomous, action is needed for women to enter the world of work, thus acquiring economic and financial independence. This is all the more true in a country like Italy that has a low female employment rate: 52.5% (15-64 years).

The freedom income promoted by the Equal Opportunities Department and the measures to promote female entrepreneurship are to be welcomed.

Important are the measures to combat gender-based violence contained in the collective agreements of Confindustria member sectors and the Agreement signed by Confindustria, CGIL, CISL and UIL to implement the European Framework Agreement on harassment and violence in the workplace.
