Confindustria (Confederation of Italian Industry) held a hearing, within the framework of the referential examination of the draft laws delegating the Government in the field of sustainable nuclear energy (C. 2669 and C. 1742 Lupi), at the joint Environment and Productive Activities Committees of the Chamber of Deputies.
During the hearing, Aurelio Regina, Confindustria's President's Delegate for Energy, illustrated the industrial system's position on the role of sustainable nuclear power as a strategic component of the national energy mix, emphasising its contribution to decarbonisation, energy security and independence, as well as to the containment of energy costs for businesses and households. With reference to energy independence profiles, during the hearing Confindustria also launched the’alarm about the emergence of new poles of demand, such as data centres, as, with the increase of domestic needs across Europe, the availability of energy to import will decrease, starting with French nuclear power, on which Italy still relies for 6.8% of the total energy consumed (16.3 % of the total import).
Confindustria reiterated the need for an organic and technically sound regulatory framework, capable of accompanying the development of new nuclear technologies - in particular small-scale modular plants - while enhancing the national industrial chain, technological skills and related employment opportunities.
