The Check-up Mezzogiorno, prepared by Confindustria and SRM, shows a strong impact of Covid on the southern economy in 2020.
The Synthetic Index of the Southern Economy continues to fall and registers, according to preliminary estimates, a drop of more than 40 points from the previous year, the lowest since 2007. The recessionary effects of the pandemic on GDP in 2020 are expected to be slightly less pronounced in the South (-9% GDP trend) than in the Centre-North (-9.8%), but still substantial; for 2021 and 2022, the recovery in the Mezzogiorno is expected to be considerably weaker (+1.2% and +1.4% respectively) compared to the Centre-North (+4.5% and +5.3%).
