On Thursday 12 and Friday 13 May, the two-day Confindustria event dedicated to the Economy of the Sea.

The first day saw the presentation of the 'Sea Project', implemented by Confindustria together with its association representatives, particularly those of the maritime-port cluster.

This project was the result of a reconnaissance of the maritime-port cluster representatives belonging to the system during which ideas, expectations and proposals were gathered to define a programme of activities to be carried out in the first two-year period 2020-2022. Subsequently, a Confederal Advisory Board of the Sea Economy, composed of all the Representatives of the maritime-port cluster.

This project emphasises the strategic value of the Sea Economy, a sector on which Confindustria believes it is more necessary than ever to develop an overall and specific strategy, enhancing its individual and already significant potential in a systemic vision, contributing significantly to the development and competitiveness, on a production and territorial scale, of the entire country. Even more so in this phase of great uncertainty and systemic criticality, the role of the Sea Economy remains and can become even more decisive for its strategic multi-level function, starting with our international trade, which functions mainly through the sea, not only as regards our exports, but also and above all for the import of energy sources, raw materials, agricultural products, semi-finished and finished products with different technological content, which are essential to feed our industrial, logistic and commercial supply chains, and consumption. Moreover, the sea is a fundamental strategic lever for diversifying supply sources and outlet markets, also in relation to current and future geopolitical and geo-economic changes.

For this reason, Confindustria has identified the Economy of the Sea as one of the strategic drivers for the relaunch, development, and growth of our country, and has drawn up a series of proposals on governance, administrative reforms and simplifications, industrial policies oriented towards the energy and digital transition, infrastructural and intermodal development, redevelopment and relaunch of tourist ports, and development of the fishing industry.
