The Check-Up Mezzogiorno 2025 is the analysis on the health of the southern economy carried out annually by Confindustria and SRM. This year's study photographs a South in progressive recovery and structural strengthening.
The growth dynamic, driven by investments, has been more sustained in recent years than in the rest of the country, albeit within a complex macroeconomic and geopolitical context. The historical gaps with respect to the country's other macro-areas have not been overcome, but a significant change of pace has been recorded, opening up a credible convergence trajectory.
In 2025 the Synthetic Index of the Southern Economy records a growth of 6.1 points after the 2024 slowdown. The GDP of the Mezzogiorno grows by +7.7% in the period 2019-2024, above the national average (+5.8%). GDP per capita also rises, to EUR 22,000, but is still well below the Italian average. The labour market shows growth of’employment but critical issues related to labour costs and skills mismatch remain. The production fabric continues to transform: the number of corporations is increasing (+4.0%), a sign of a gradual strengthening of the production structure. More fragile instead is the’export, which will show weakness in 2025, although manufacturing continues to be the mainstay of southern exports.
